How to Plan your Temporary Move to London

Posted on 07/08/2014

London; the United Kingdom’s capital city and the most populated city in the European Union is a melting pot of racial diversity, and a place of great opportunity no matter who you are. There’s plenty of reasons to move here, even if it’s just temporarily; there are forty three Universities based here, so no matter what you want to study, you can find it within the city’s limits.

Not only that, but London is also a major retail centre, so there’s plenty of work to do, as well as plenty to spend your money on. That, teamed with the fact that so many big companies are based in London means that there’s new work opportunities every day. So, how should you go about planning your temporary London move? There’s quite a few things to handle, so lets break it down.

Hire a moving company, or renting a van

Depending on the size of your move, the distance you’re travelling and the size of your moving budget you might want to give this question major consideration. A moving company London will handle a lot of the hard work like loading the van and transporting your goods. Most will even help with the packing and the disassembly and reassembly of furniture if you request such a service. However, if you’re only moving a short distance with a small amount of goods, it might be worth saving your money and handle everything yourself.

Regardless of which you choose, you’ll have to do some research into what companies you’ll be hiring. No matter which route you take, it’s worthwhile to go for a local company, for added convenience. And, be sure to ask people you know for recommendations – if a friend of yours has moved recently for example, they might be able to point you in the right direction. If you don’t know anyone who’s moved recently, do some research on the Internet – there are plenty of web sites that document normal people’s experiences.

If you end up going for a moving company, be sure to check if you’re getting a good deal. When asking for a cost estimate make sure all of the costs are included, like insurance, service taxes and the like. Companies love to throw hidden costs on top, so do all you can to make sure you know what you’re paying.

If you decide to rent a van instead, you’ll have to make sure that you know what size you want. Estimate just how much you’ll be taking with you (like how many boxes, how much furniture etc.) and see what size of van will be sufficient. You don’t want to be wasting money on a van that’s too large, or wasting time on a van that’s too small.

Planning the packing

Now that you’ve got your moving arrangements sorted, you’ve got to do the packing. Of course, if you’ve hired a moving company that will be handling this for you, you can skip this step. For those who haven’t, here are a few quick things to keep in mind;

- Get a hold of; Plenty of moving boxes, plastic bags packing tape, bubble wrap and labels at the very least.

- Set aside all your supplies before you start, so you’re not fumbling around for things in the middle of the packing process.

- Plan ahead, set aside different boxes for different rooms, so when you move you know where everything is.

- When packing fragile objects, use your bubble wrap liberally. You can never be too careful

- Use plastic bags for packing floppy items like blankets and pillows – this will save space in your moving boxes.

By planning ahead, you can be sure you’ve got everything under control. And with everything under control, you can focus on the positive aspects of moving. Especially if you’re moving to the European Capital, where there’s lots of new opportunities, even on a temporary move.
