How to Prepare the New Place for the Move-in

Posted on 07/08/2014

You packed all your stuff in a skyscraper-high pile of boxes patiently. You made a reservation for the transport and it seems that everything is prepared for the move-in. But is it actually? Are you sure you aren’t forgetting something? You might be…

Before moving in, it is a good idea to check the condition of the new place. If you are waiting for the van to come and load your stuff, you’d better hold on and go to the place you picked to live in. There are some things that you must pay attention to before you move in to unpack all of those boxes and unwrap all of that furniture. Here are some of the main things to look at:

Usually, during the first inspection of the new place you do not have the chance to take a closer look at some very important parts of it. There is not enough time or there is no physical possibility because there is furniture everywhere, but it is a fact that you cannot discover all of the place’s secrets in full upon first view.

So, first check the walls and the floor. If there is any damage, make sure to repair them before you move in. If you are not able to repair them by yourself, you should hire a specialist for the job. You are risking it all if you move into a damaged accommodation. Also, ask someone who knows about woodwork to check any furniture that the previous owners, if any. Make sure there is no woodworm in the wardrobes, for example.

After this, check the water supply system, the cellar and the roof for leaks and also check the chimney and the fireplace (if any) to make sure they are clean and well built. Still, if you find any damages or inappropriate things, hire a professional to fix it. I strongly recommend if you do not know exactly how to do it, you shouldn’t touch it. Believe me, it is better for both the house and yourself. Attempting significant repairs on your own if you don’t have the proper experience could be dangerous.

Once you’ve taken care of the main issues that may cause you trouble later, now you can do the routine everyday cleaning activities that should be done to keep the house healthy and safe. What do I mean? Well, wash the windows, mop the floors, clean the toilet, and wipe the dust, etc.
And before you move in, spread the carpets on the floor, hang the curtains on the windows, and even prepare the fireplace with some fresh wood, or coal, if it is the season. Just prepare everything before unloading your boxes and furniture into the new place. It will be easier for you to arrange everything in its place later.

When you made sure everything is okay, it is time to move in. I have an idea for you here too. Use the move in to organize a fantastic welcome party. I know a welcome party is usually organised by the neighbours, but you can do it instead. Just imagine what a surprise it will be and what a positive impression you will create with your next-door neighbours.
